Information Services Section, Library (Tel: 3411 2724)
This session will examine texts we use everyday – maps. Maps help us get around, but they also shape the way we think
about space. Every map involves an act of translation: from geographic reality to abstract symbol, from three-dimensional
terrain to one-dimensional picture—in sum, from complexity to simplicity. Participants in this session will examine a variety
of maps, from fourteenth-century imago mundi (images of the world) to contemporary mass transit diagrams, and will
consider how we can make sense of these ubiquitous documents.
